President Joe Biden praised Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob for his pivotal role in facilitating a historic U.S.-Russia prisoner swap that led to the release of three Americans from Russian custody. The prisoner exchange, completed in August, involved seven nations and freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, a Radio Free Europe editor, and Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine.

Largest US-Russia Prisoner Swap in Post-Soviet Era

The deal is considered the largest prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia in the post-Soviet era, involving 24 individuals. The negotiation process took several months, with Slovenia and other European nations playing key roles by releasing Russian detainees in their custody.

Biden’s Acknowledgement of Slovenia’s Contribution

President Biden commended Golob during their Oval Office meeting, stating, “Your diplomacy and leadership made this possible. That’s not an exaggeration.” Slovenia agreed to release two Russian spies, Artem Viktorovich Dultsev and Anna Valerevna Dultseva, who had been living in Ljubljana under false Argentine identities. Their arrest in 2022 revealed their covert operations, including relaying Moscow’s orders and moving cash across NATO and EU member states.

Golob: “True Friends Make the Impossible Possible”

Prime Minister Golob emphasized the importance of international cooperation, saying, “With a little help from true friends, nothing is impossible.” His visit marks only the third time a Slovenian prime minister has been invited to the White House. Previous visits were made by Janez Janša in 2006 and Borut Pahor in 2011.

The Biden-Golob meeting also focused on other critical topics, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, global energy security, and Western Balkan stability. The two leaders shared concerns over Russia’s aggression and the need for a unified approach.

Golob’s Stance on Gaza Conflict

In addition to his involvement in the prisoner swap, Golob has been vocal on the international stage. Last month, at the United Nations General Assembly, he criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza, urging him to “stop the bloodshed” and bring an end to the ongoing conflict.

Germany’s Role in the Prisoner Swap

Biden’s praise of Golob follows his recent visit to Berlin, where he thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his country’s involvement in the prisoner swap. Germany agreed to release Vadim Krasikov, a Russian convicted of murdering a Georgian citizen in 2019, as part of the broader exchange deal.
