South Korea calls for the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly sent to Russia to support the war in Ukraine. South Korean officials express concerns about escalating military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, raising security threats.
South Korea has demanded the immediate pullout of North Korean soldiers allegedly deployed in Russia. On Monday, Vice South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the increasing military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.
According to South Korea’s spy agency, 1,500 North Korean special forces were reportedly sent to Russia to support its war against Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has mentioned intelligence suggesting that North Korea might deploy 10,000 soldiers to assist Russian forces.
During the meeting with Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev, Kim condemned North Korea’s actions, calling it a “grave security threat” to South Korea and the international community. He also emphasized South Korea’s collaboration with international allies to address the issue.
Zinoviev responded, asserting that the Russia-North Korea partnership is not intended to harm South Korea’s security interests.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, in a call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, expressed strong opposition to the deepening military ties between North Korea and Russia. He stated that South Korea would not stand by idly and plans to send a delegation to NATO to share information regarding the military cooperation.
While the U.S. and NATO have not officially confirmed the presence of North Korean troops in Russia, reports have heightened fears in South Korea that Russia may provide North Korea with advanced nuclear and missile technologies in exchange for its military support.
The potential transfer of military technologies from Russia to North Korea could significantly bolster North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, posing a major security risk for South Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has recently severed relations with South Korea and made nuclear threats.
If confirmed, these developments could prompt South Korea to reconsider its stance on supplying weapons to Ukraine, especially if North Korea’s military support for Russia escalates.

While Russia denies the use of North Korean troops in its conflict with Ukraine, North Korean state media has yet to comment. A video released by Ukrainian officials allegedly shows North Korean soldiers preparing to join the battlefield, but independent verification of the footage remains pending.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the circulating reports but emphasized the contradictory nature of the information, suggesting a cautious approach to the situation.
The growing cooperation between North Korea and Russia raises significant concerns for South Korea’s security and regional stability. As tensions rise, the international community closely watches how this development might shape future military alliances and technological exchanges between the two nations.
